What size liner do I need for a 10x6 foot pond?
A 16 × 12 ft sheet for a pond 2 ft deep with a 1 ft edge overlap — 192 sq ft. Each dimension is the pond size plus twice the depth (the liner has to run down one side and back up the other) plus twice the overlap.
How much overlap should a pond liner have at the edge?
About 1 ft past the edge on every side, the default here, so the liner can be anchored under coping stone, soil, or a gravel trench. Allow more on sloping ground or where a stream or waterfall feeds in, and run the protective underlayment out at least as far.
What thickness of pond liner should I buy?
45 mil EPDM is the usual choice for backyard and koi ponds — flexible enough to conform to shelves and fish-safe when sold as pond-grade. Thinner 20–30 mil PVC costs less but punctures and degrades in UV faster; neither changes the sheet size this calculator gives you.
Does this account for planting shelves and varying depth?
No — it applies your maximum depth across the whole footprint, so a shelved pond gets a slightly oversized sheet. That errs in the safe direction, since trimming excess is easy and a liner that comes up short is scrap.
