About Turkey Thaw Calculator

A frozen turkey thaws in the refrigerator at roughly 24 hours per 4–5 pounds, or much faster submerged in cold water at about 30 minutes per pound with the water changed every half hour. Enter the bird's weight and, optionally, your meal date and time to get a start-by moment for each method.

The fridge method is the safe default: the bird never leaves refrigeration and keeps another day or two once thawed. Cold water is the rescue plan, but the turkey must be cooked immediately afterward.

Common uses

  • Figure out which day to move the Thanksgiving turkey to the fridge
  • Rescue a still-frozen bird the morning of the meal
  • Plan freezer-to-table timing when buying a turkey ahead

Example

Input

14 lb turkey · dinner Thu 5:00 PM

Output

Fridge: ~75 hr, move to fridge by Mon 2:20 PM · Cold water: 7 hr, start by 10:00 AM

Limitations

  • Times are USDA-style estimates and don't include cooking — add roast time on top.
  • Never thaw at room temperature; the surface enters the 40–140°F danger zone long before the center thaws.
