Why is the PNG so much bigger than my original JPG?
PNG uses lossless compression, which is a poor fit for photographic detail — a photo that JPEG stores in a few hundred kilobytes can easily become several megabytes as PNG. The size increase is normal and expected.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve the image quality?
No. Detail that JPEG compression already discarded cannot be recovered; the PNG is a pixel-exact copy of the decoded JPEG. Converting only prevents further quality loss in later edits and saves.
