Limitations

• Assumes tight-laid pavers; wide sand joints slightly reduce the count
• Edge restraints and polymeric sand are not included

How many pavers do I need for a 100 square foot patio?

With standard 4×8 in pavers, 100 sq ft takes 450 pavers exactly (4.5 per sq ft) — buy about 495 with a 10% waste factor. Larger 12×12 in pavers cut that to 100 exact, around 110 with waste.

How do I calculate pavers per square foot?

Divide 144 by the paver's face area in square inches. A 4×8 in paver is 32 sq in, so 144 ÷ 32 = 4.5 pavers per square foot; a 6×9 is 2.67 per square foot.

How thick should the base be under pavers?

This calculator defaults to 6 in of compacted gravel topped with 1 in of bedding sand, a solid spec for patios and walkways. Driveways and soft, poorly draining soils generally call for a thicker base — 8–12 in of gravel.

Why buy more pavers than the exact count?

Edge cuts, breakage during splitting, and future repairs all eat into the supply, and matching a discontinued paver years later is difficult. The default 10% waste factor covers a straight-laid patio; intricate patterns or lots of curves justify 15%.
