Rules of thumb: THX aims for ~40° of your field of view (distance ≈ diagonal × 1.2, great for 4K), SMPTE for 30° (× 1.6), and the 1080p guideline keeps you far enough (× 2.5) that HD pixels stay invisible. Sit closer for 4K content, farther for lower resolutions.

How far should I sit from a 65-inch TV?
About 6.5 ft by the THX 4K guideline (diagonal × 1.2), 8.7 ft by SMPTE's 30-degree standard (× 1.6), or 13.5 ft by the older 1080p rule (× 2.5). For a 4K panel, most viewers land comfortably between the first two.
What is the difference between the THX and SMPTE recommendations?
They target different fields of view: THX aims for an immersive ~40 degrees of your vision (distance ≈ diagonal × 1.2), while SMPTE's 30 degrees (× 1.6) is the more relaxed cinema standard. Neither is wrong — it is a trade between immersion and comfort.
Can you sit too close to a 4K TV?
At normal seating distances, 4K pixel density is fine even at the close THX distance of 1.2 times the diagonal. Much closer than that and content limitations, compression artifacts, and neck strain become problems before pixels do.
